Urgent Action for Argentina Mar24
We have another new Urgent Action :- Nahuel Morandini, Roque Villegas and Lucía González are being prosecuted for expressing ironic opinions about a public figure on social media (the wife of the former governor of the province of Jujuy) . Morandini and Villegas posted on X and Facebook; they were immediately arrested and initially held in prison for 54 days. The charges against Gonzalez are based on a comment she made in a private WhatsApp group.
Amnesty International has previously expressed concern over human rights violations in Jujuy. Last June there were violent police repressions of the demonstrations that took place due to a constitutional reform approved in June. This investigation and the charges brought against the three individuals are extremely alarming. We are calling for the charges against all three of them to be dropped.
This is an email and social media action. Here are some suggested posts for use on X or other platforms. You also may wish to read them to come up with a subject line for emails.
Please note, at the moment there is a clumsy typo in the model letter – please delete “General Attorney Diana Salazar” in the address. As well as sending to Mr. Walter Rondón, Public Prosecutor of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Jujuy (wrondon@mpajujuy.gob.ar) you can email Mr. Lello Sanchez, Attorney General in charge of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Jujuy (slello@mpajujuy.gob.ar). Please copy in the Argentine Embassy:- info@argentine-embassy-uk.org
